Do you suffer from MS shot trauma???
One of the most difficult things I experience with Multiple Sclerosis is related to the shots. I know that I must have the shots to fend off (or minimize) future problems with Multiple Sclerosis but the shots are just awful. I experience:
- enormous apprehension for 24 hours prior to the shot
- painful shots even though they are subcutaneous
- pain after the shot as the medicine is beginning its journey through my body
I have gone through this (out of fear that my Multiple Sclerosis will get worse) three days out of every week for the past three years.
However, I got a little reprieve this week that may be enduring. Maybe you'll find it helpful as you are dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. When I went to a nurse to have some stitches removed earlier this week, she happened to ask me how my shots were going. I explained the trauma I go through and she offered a solution.
She recommended that I try a numbing cream specifically designed to minimize the pain of subcu shots. I was desperate so I tried it twice this week. The numbing cream did not remove the pain entirely, however, it has made it much easier to endure this painful aspect of my Multiple Sclerosis. I found that I did not dread my shots so much as the actual shot was more than 50% LESS painful.
This is huge. I may be able to make it long enough through the regular shots for an oral drug that may be 1-2 years away. I should have asked my neurologist about this months and months ago!!
